What's behind this sauna hat?
In short: good materials, good people, and a love for saunas. That's how Løyly hats are made. The beautiful felt we use is produced the old-fashioned way at the Sjølingstad Uldvarefabrikk museum factory. Here, Norwegian-produced wool is washed, carded, and felted - by lovely old machines from another era.
The vibrant new felt is then sent to us in Bergen, where we deliver it to our talented employees participating in VTA (Work Training and Adaptation) measures at Nordnes Verksteder. Here, the felt is transformed into the hats we love. The result of skilled cutting, sewing, and a good dose of love are fantastic sauna hats!
Why use a sauna hat?
A sauna hat as an item of clothing is a traditional and essential accessory with deep roots in Finnish sauna culture. For many, it might seem contradictory to wear something associated with warm clothing in an already hot sauna. However, the principle is simple. A sauna hat insulates the head from the extreme temperature outside, and since heat rises, it spares your head from the worst heat. The sauna hat therefore allows you to keep your head "cool" and your body sweating - for a little longer. Furthermore, hair and scalp are protected from wear and dryness.
