The names are similar, but Eucalyptus Smithii, Eucalyptus Globulus and Eucalyptus Citriodora have different aroma profiles. Smithii is lighter and greener, Globulus has a more pronounced camphor note, while Citriodora has a lemony character. This is the most useful difference to consider when choosing an essential oil for the sauna.

Here we compare three oils from Aromen. Løyly is a distributor of Aromen essential oils in Norway. In our range, all three come in 11 ml bottles.

The short answer

For a lighter eucalyptus profile with green, woody notes, take a closer look at Smithii. If you prefer the sharper, camphor-like eucalyptus character, Globulus is the most relevant choice. For a distinct lemon note, choose Citriodora.

Smithii: lighter, greener eucalyptus

Aromen describes Eucalyptus Smithii as less intense than other types of eucalyptus. It has a fresh, airy character with a soft, woody note. The eucalyptus is still distinct, but the camphor note is less prominent than in Globulus.

Smithii is therefore our suggestion if you want to start with one of these three and prefer a lighter aroma. It is also worth a closer look if you like eucalyptus but find the sharpest version too dominant.

Globulus: a more pronounced eucalyptus character

Eucalyptus Globulus has a stronger camphor note and a sharp, herbal undertone. Compared with Smithii, Aromen describes a more pronounced, cool character.

This is the option for you if you want the classic eucalyptus character to stand out. Choose it because you like this profile, not because a stronger aroma is necessarily better. If you already have Smithii, the comparison gives you a practical idea of what sets the two apart before you order another bottle.

Citriodora: eucalyptus with a lemon note

Eucalyptus Citriodora is the most distinct of the three. Aromen describes a bright, citrus freshness with soft herbal depth and a faint camphor-like note.

Citriodora is a relevant choice if you like lemon and want to try a different side of eucalyptus. The lemon note is part of this oil's own character. The name does not mean it is a blend of lemon oil and eucalyptus oil.

You do not need to start with all three

Start with what you already like: green and woody notes, sharper eucalyptus or citrus. Choose one oil first if you are unsure. That gives you a clearer starting point for deciding what you might want to try later, rather than buying several oils with similar names without knowing what you are looking for.

Once you have chosen

This comparison is about aroma profiles, not differences in proven health effects or safety. A milder aroma is not a separate safety category. Read the label and follow the usage and safety instructions for the specific oil you buy. Also check what your sauna and heater allow. In a shared sauna, get permission from the operator before using oil.
