A ladle of water meets scorching-hot stones, and a cloud of steam rises. Løyly. The word is Finnish for this very steam—and to us, it is more than a name. It is the moment everything is built around, and a small pause from everything else.
The story behind this hat
This hat was created in collaboration with KOS Sauna—New York’s first floating sauna. They wanted a sauna hat with genuine craftsmanship behind it, made from Norwegian wool, and found their way to us. We made it for their guests at Marka, where it is now worn on the bench, session after session.
The hat stands out with a hand-braided loop made from three colours of wool yarn, giving it a character all its own. We liked this hat so much that we asked KOS if we could sell it here in Norway too. They said yes. This is exactly the same hat that insulates heads in New York—just without the KOS logo. The design is theirs; the craftsmanship is ours.
100% Norwegian wool. Made in Norway.
Like every Løyly hat, it starts with 100% Norwegian wool—washed, dyed and felted the traditional way at Sjølingstad Uldvarefabrikk, a working museum factory in Southern Norway where 19th-century machines still do the job. From there, the fresh felt is sent to us in Western Norway, where every hat is cut and sewn in small batches. No harsh chemicals, no unnecessary processing—and no two hats exactly alike.
Why wear a sauna hat?
It may seem counterintuitive to wear something “warm” in an already hot sauna. But the principle is simple: the wool felt insulates your head from the intense heat rising around you, helping your head stay cooler while your body is free to sweat. You can sit for longer, feel more comfortable and protect your hair and scalp from dry heat and wear.
Thick where it matters, light where it counts
The felt is a full 6 mm thick, yet the hat weighs just under 50 grams. Maximum insulation without the weight. You notice the protection, not the weight.
Use and care
Wear the hat dry. Do not soak it before use, and avoid dipping your head under water while wearing it—wet wool loses its shape and becomes rough and fuzzy.
Wool is remarkable stuff. It is naturally self-cleaning, so the hat usually does not need washing between sessions. If it does need refreshing, place it in cold water for about an hour, let the water drain away without wringing, then lay it flat on a warm bathroom floor or hang it to dry. Do not wring or expose it to high heat.
